Ronald Clyne (1925–2006) was an American designer and graphic artist. He is best known for creating over 500 covers for Folkways Records between 1948 and 1986.

" Clyne has been quoted as saying "A record cover should be seen at a glance. You shouldn’t have to study different sections of it. You should see the total instantly" - Wikipedia

Folksongs and Instrumentals with Guitar is a 1958 album by American blues and folk musician Elizabeth Cotten and was released on Folkways Records as FG 3526. In 1989 it was reissued by Smithsonian Folkways as SFW40009 featuring Mike Seeger's updated notes with comments on Cotten's life, musical style, and song lyrics. The album is also known as Freight Train and Other North Carolina Folk Songs and Tunes and was originally released as Elizabeth Cotten: Negro Folk Songs and Tunes. It is best known for containing the earliest recording of her classic "Freight Train." The album cover was designed by Ronald Clyne.

In 2008, the Library of Congress named the album to its National Recording Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". - Wikipedia

Got two #FolkwaysRecords releases today at Vintage Vinyl, a new record shop in downtown #Sarasota. They also had a very cool Leadbelly 10” that I decided to leave behind.

I always thought Folkways was a project of the #Smithsonian but it only became that when the original owner of the label, Moses Asch, died in 1986. I wonder why I’ve heard more about John & Allan Lomax and Harry Smith than him? It really was genius to think to record all of these different types of #FolkMusic in their original settings so that we can have that window into the past for posterity. #Leadbelly #vinyl

Paul Clayton - "Dulcimer Songs and Solos" (1962)

If you see a dulcimer record, just get it.

So sorry to learn of the death of Michael Hurley. The attachment is a screenshot from a Smithsonian Folkways mailing that arrived this afternoon. My old singing partner was a solid Michael Hurley fan.
