Georgia's best-known storyteller was fishing guide, Lemuel “Lem” Griffis (1896/1968). Known to entertain visitors at his fish camp outside Fargo with tall tales from the swamp. "Storytellers: folktales & legends from the South" features him. #FolkloreThursday #Georgia #Folktales
In 1916, the American anthropologist Mabel Cook Cole published a collection of #folktales from the Philippines, including mischievous spirits, talking jars, and the antics of personified celestial beings, bickering suns and moons. A new experience.

The folktale I discovered in Peter Christen Asbjørnsen's manuscripts yesterday is written in a wonderful mixture of Danish and Norwegian oral forms, and it is full of segmentation mistakes, rewrites, reiterations, and all the signs of having been written in haste (as the story was being told, perhaps).

Translating the tale into English would necessitate normalizing the language (into Danish or Norwegian?), then actually making the narrative make sense, before rendering it in English.

I decided to cut out the middle bits, and go straight to an English rendition of the story, using edits to fill the gaps, correct the plot, and generally make it all entertaining.

As such, the tale will bear my name, and be included in my Forgotten Folktales from Norway project.

Not only does my annotated edition of The Complete Norwegian Folktales and Legends of Asbjørnsen & Moe contain the collectors' notes from the first two original volumes (the folktales), but I have also compiled notes on every single folktale in the first two volumes, and every hulder tale and folk legend in the third volume.

Listen to @rorystarr reading the editor's note on “The Three Billy-Goats Bruse” from the first volume:

In "Wise Women", Sharon Blackie & Angharad Wynne re-narrate a selection of European #folktales mostly from the British Isles on old hags, witches, grandmothers, fairy godmothers and other mature women, of middle age & beyond

Today's Small Town Legend is special: it comes from my late grandfather, Zalka Ottó, who was an amazing storyteller. He especially delighted in trickster tales and local anecdotes.
This was one of his favorite stories to tell.
