Origin of the word petard... as in hoisted by it.

Evidently, it's a Shakespearean thing. The word is derived from the French verb péter, to pass wind.

So essentially, Shakespeare decided to use it as a reveal, sort of knowing who cut the cheese, spoiling the mood.
