Forte in salita, potente a cronometro, veloce allo sprint.

The ideal runner exists, but doesn't win: Wout van Aert, the magnificent loser.

Strong uphill, powerful in time trials, fast in the sprint. In a world of increasingly young superheroes that makes him seem outdated, he is the ideal man for any terrain: cobblestones, gravel, mud, asphalt. Yet he never wins: there is always someone who, at the right moment, has something more than him, also a protagonist of crashes, fractures, interventions. But at every great classic, more and more fans hope for a success of the great Flemish cyclist. It will be like this on Sunday too at the Paris-Roubaix.

“The doctors can’t figure out where the problem comes from, I’ve had enough”: the ordeal of Eddy Merckx

There is no peace for the cycling legend Eddy Merckx, who has been hospitalized for a week to treat an infection in his hip. The former Belgian cyclist will need his seventh surgery in little more than a year, from the post-accident in December 2024, when he fell off his bike while slipping on a level crossing and fracturing his hip. This was reported by the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, which also quotes the Cannibal. “Because of the severe pain, I was hospitalized last Monday – Merckx told the Flemish newspaper – The doctors can’t identify the source of the infection and, since antibiotics are not very effective, they will have to operate on me again next Monday. Enough of this nonsense, I’ve had enough!” the cyclist concluded, fed up with the situation.

His health problems date back to December 2024, when the winner of five Tours de France and 19 Monuments, fell during a bike ride in Mechelen, Belgium, slipping on a level crossing. Merckx fractured his hip and the initial prosthesis, which was applied incorrectly, subsequently had to be replaced. It was not the first unfortunate fall for Eddy Merckx. In October 2019, the Belgian was the victim of another cycling accident, with serious consequences: on that occasion, during a ride with a group of friends near Gent, Merckx suffered a head trauma and several injuries to his back, hip and knees.

When I praised Peter #Vermeulen's critical insights on the concept of #TheoryOfMind in #autism science, quoted in translation in the English Wikipedia, I lamented that they were from a #French book that hadn't been translated into English. Someone (I forget who) challenged me to read it in French, learning the language on the fly. Encouraged by having an easier time than I expected reading Vermeulen's bio article in the French Wikipedia with the aid of word lookup — and by my belief that English is functionally not a Germanic language at all, but a Romance language in Germanic disguise — I decided actually to go for it.

But now that a copy of the 3rd edition of "Autisme et émotions" is actually on my desk, I've discovered that there is an unexpected new angle. This book is itself a translation, INTO French, of Vermeulen's #Flemish original, "Autisme en emoties"!

This will be an even more interesting experience than I expected.

Hilde de Baerdemaeker (born 8 May 1978) is a #Flemish actress. She is best known for her roles as Louise in Louislouise, and as Linda De Leenheer in De Zaak Alzheimer (in English: The Memory of a Killer or #TheAlzheimerCase), Team Spirit, and Halleluja. She reprised her role as Linda de Leenheer in #DossierK.

People of Mastodon, I need some help translating something my mum used to say to me when I was young.

She would say in Flemish something like "curieuzeneuzen floorstitcher'.
I've worked out that curieuzeneuzen literally means "curious nose", but the part that sounded like "floorstitcher" has eluded me.

Sadly my mum passed away last week. She was born in Gent, but grew up in England. Remembering her today reminded me about the phrase.

On a related note, how does a country that small have 3 different dialects of flemish‽
