He even named his fictional spy after esteemed ornithologist James Bond, whose influential field guide “Birds of the West Indies” is still in use today.

In March 1956 Fleming joined a birding conservation expedition to Great Inagua, where I took this photo, today.

A while ago, I learned that there's a flamingo species called the "lesser flamingo". Which made me wonder: which asshole taxonomer gave that bird its English name? I mean, other animals are called the great white shark, the giant panda, the emperor penguin, the king cobra, the Goliath birdeater... and then there's the "lesser flamingo"? What did that poor bird do to deserve that?
