The Con man, once a weeping ruin of cis-genderhood (their words), stepped into the throng, his calibrated goggles afixed to a top hat he spent seventeen hours researching online, inquiring about, and finally selecting. His gear-laden revolvers, brass-appearing and chunky, were at the ready and would be drawn for every photo opportunity. He wore a trans-lives-matter t-shirt burried beneath layers of costumery, and a large skeleton key with innoperable spring-action colored buttons hung around his neck on a plastic chain painted in a metallic cross between copper and brass. The key, he told everyone, unlocked the chamber of secrets which he had been traversing time and space looking for. He would ask every fury and every cosplayer, "pardon my intrusion, but dost thou know of the Chamber of.." He would look to his left and right and put on a serious face before saying, "Secrets?"

I've joined a lot of protests in my home town of Melbourne over the last few decades. And I'm so glad I did.

Being surrounded by like minded souls helps you to feel grounded when so much else is spiralling into chaos. Being reminded you are not alone. Feeling some sense of validation that choosing to care for other people is a good path forward.

I never once believed those protests would change the government. But I knew they would change every one of us who turned up. For the better.
