Searching for what this endearingly amateurish analysis reminds me of, and I finally found it: it's like 19th century discussions of photo technique before Hurter and Driffield discovered the characteristic curve in 1890.

Oh what a wealth of knowledge we had from the experts at Kodak and Ilford and Agfa and Ansco. Oh the labs at Pop Photo and Modern. Will film ever be big enough to fund one of them again?

A bonus shot before we get back into the Riverside time machine. This utterly mundane photo from a brief 1992 visit to Tompkins County, taken on 120 Agfa Vario-XL (an XP2 competitor), illustrates a technical point: how do you correct the verticals without Photoshop when you're using a camera without a rising front (in this case, a Mamiya C33 TLR)?

One: I continue to have fun exploring the use of D-23. My wife requested a photo of her white heirloom roses in bloom, so I jumped at the chance to test highlight separation in very flat lighting. The gamma was turned way up here, but the gradation came along very nicely -- it's all there. The performance of the old Mamiya 135mm lens (a tessar design) was also gratifying.
