Experimenting with Double Filters

Yesterday morning I woke up at 5 a.m. It was dark, cold, and quiet — the kind of silence that makes you wonder if you should just crawl back into bed. But the sky was clear with some clouds forming near the horizon, and experience told me this could become one of those fiery sunrises worth losing sleep over.

So I packed my Canon 5DsR with the Sigma Art 24–70 mm and headed to the Loonse en Drunense Duinen. Besides chasing light, I had something else in mind — a little experiment. I wanted to see what would happen if I combined a polarizing filter with a transparent plastic petri dish (from Corning).

If you’ve ever looked at a car’s rear window through polarized sunglasses and seen those oily rainbow patterns — that’s birefringence at work. When two polarizing surfaces interact with certain plastics, they reveal hidden stress patterns in vivid colors.

So I rotated both filters until the sky exploded into gradients of purple, turquoise, and gold. No Photoshop tricks here — just light, plastic, and curiosity playing together.

Sometimes, science and art meet right in front of your lens.

Last week, we finished marking and georeferencing the plots for the measurements with the Litéral device in our practice-scale barley / soybean strip cropping experiment at Strickhof in Uitikon (ZH, CH). The barley / soybean strip cropping experiment constitutes the practice-scale counterpart to the small plot barley / soybean border effect experiment on our research station in Eschikon (ZH, CH) 🌾 🌱 🔬

About two months ago, we sowed the soybean in our barley / soybean border effect experiment. Sowing the soybean in between the standing barley was quite tricky, but in the meantime, the soybean plants have emerged, and we are busy collecting data about the interaction between the two crop species. 🌱 🌾

#Grazing and #Mowing are two major land use types in #NaturalGrasslands. Jiayue Liu et al. conducted a #FieldExperiment to compare the effects of continuous versus rotational grazing, and low versus high mowing frequencies on #GrasslandEcosystems in a #SemiaridSteppe of #InnerMongolia. The study provided insights into the #NutrientCycling in grazing and mowing grassland ecosystems from multiple perspective.

In "The effect of positive feedback on primary school students’ academic self-concept: Gender heterogeneity in a light-touch randomized intervention" Tamas Keller analyzes the causal effect of positive feedback on students’ task-specific math self-concept using data from a field experiment involving 1251 students and explores the gender heterogeneity.

New preprint from our group: https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/hwzsc_v1

A field-experiment tested whether a brief stress management intervention could improve police performance in a simulated training exercise for police students. We found self-rated stress to be associated with lower observer-rated performance. The "tactical breathing" intervention led to improved performance. The intervention was not associated with perceiving stress as lower.

😱 Disclosure: The #fieldexperiment shows that disclosing the use of the AI application leads to significantly less interest in an offer among job candidates (compared to no information). #algorithmaversion
⚙ Deployment: Results indicate that the person–job fit determined by the leaders can be predicted by the AI application. However, both assessments (from the human and the AI applications) may have different forms of gender biases. More research needed. #digitaldiscretion (2/2)

Excited to share that the #FieldExperiment from my #dissertation is out now in #JPAM! For the study, I submitted 9,480 job applications to examine how employers respond to #MBAs from the types of universities that most students attend.
