I've been reading a new translation of Li Qingzhao's poetry by Wendy Chen, and in her poem 'A Cutting of Plum Blossoms' there's a mention of a 'brocade letter' by Su Hui and the reference piqued my curiosity.
Created by Su Hui in the 4th century her 'letter' was shuttle-woven on brocade and is an extraordinary palindrome poem(s) of 841 characters in a 29 x 29 grid that can be read in 2,848 ways. A stunning story in words and thread.
Inspired by her own garden and her visit to Monet's gardens at Giverny, textile artist Kathrin Marchenko created a large 110 x 280 centimeters thread painting, 'Nymphéas Beyond', in which water and plants seem to become one.
