There are mature standards to fix this: HL7 FHIR, SMART on FHIR, and the Bulk Data spec.

Reflecting on my last post: where you store your health data should be a choice, like picking a server on the #Fediverse.
βWe don't need more national databases or HIEs to act as "landing zones" for unorganized data. HIEs often fail because they are just dumb pipes moving unstandardized noise.
βWhat we need is a shared vocabulary (#OMOP/ #FHIR).
When we have that, the location of our data can be a choice, and we can let the protocol handle the rest. #HealthIT #Interoperability
Why is it easier to follow a stranger on the #Fediverse when they move servers than to move your own labs between hospitals?
Proprietary EHRs are walled gardens. We don't "own" our data if we have to pay a fee to access it or fill out a dozen forms to transfer a record.
What if our phones were the source of our health record? Hospitals were contributors, not owners. Open protocols (#FHIR) over proprietary platforms could eliminate redundant tests, procedures, and screening forms.
