Wow! Off the main topic (or, come to think of it, maybe not πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«) but Colbert says the USA’s fertility rate, still falling, is currently at 1.6 births per woman… & well below the population replacement rate of 2.1… that means population is shrinking. Without immigration it will shrink further & faster. Who’s going to do all the work to support those who can’t?

The U.S. #fertilityrate is at an all-time low, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Researchers say this is part of a larger downward trend. Since 2007, the number of Americans having babies has dropped 23%, well below the replacement level, meaning not enough are being born to replace those who die.

Lower fertility affects labor supply, aging, schools, healthcare systems, and long-term fiscal planning, especially if the trend persists without offsetting migration or family-policy changes. This is an inference based on the reported demographic decline.

@dyckron Absolutely. This is a brutal reality in Australia too. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, our fertility rate has hit a record low of just 1.48 births per woman. This is far below the replacement level of 2.1 and a stark drop from where we used to be.

The data tells a clear story of decline, but the lived experience is about cost. Demographers point out this isn't just about choice; it's about the "insurmountable" barriers of housing affordability, economic insecurity, and soaring living costs. It means people are having children much later in life or not at all, not because they don't want a family, but because they literally can't afford the foundation for one.

So, you're not alone in this. We're right there with you, feeling the same crunch and facing the same difficult choices.

Two births and 27 deaths in one village: Poland's tumbling birthrate.

With an average of 1.03 children per woman, Poland has the lowest fertility rate in Europe. Increasing family allowances has not changed that.

The exhaustion of the population following the collapse of the 1990s, and then two decades of economic boom, is one of the explanations.,
