Today in Labor History February 25, 1986: As a result of ongoing protests, Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos begged President Ronald Reagan for advice. Reagan told him to “cut and cut cleanly.” That evening, Marcos and his wife Imelda fled the nation aboard a U.S. air force plane, after 20 years of rule. He and his family, and an entourage of 90 people (mostly servants), arrived in Hawaii the next day. They brought 22 crates of cash valued at $717 million, 300 crates of jewelry of unknown value, $4 million worth of unset precious gems, $200,000 in gold bullion, $1 million in Philippine pesos and deposit slips for $124 million in banks in the Cayman Islands. Plus, countless crates of shoes. The Marcos’s hold the Guinness record for the largest ever theft from a government, but Trump will likely smash this record, if he hasn't already. Their son, Bong Bong Marcos, is the current president of the Philippines. His vice president is Sara Duterte, daughter of the Philippines last president, the violently repressive Rodrigo Duterte, who oversaw the assassinations of well over 1,000 street children and alleged drug dealers. Under Ferdinand Marcos, there were over 3,000 documented extrajudicial murders, 35,000 documented victims of torture and tens of thousands of people imprisoned.

The #PeoplePowerRevolution/#EDSARevolution began in the #Philippines on #ThisDayInHistory in 1986 during an extended period of civil unrest against brutal dictator #FerdinandMarcos. Unable to ease protests, Marcos left for exile in his patron country, the US, settling in Hawaii.

The world's prior experience in this area is with the likes of #FerdinandMarcos and #ImeldaMarcos. Although Imelda claimed to have been reduced to pauperhood at one point, by no reasonable standard was that true.

And xe had the same level of fanatical popular support despite everything that #DonaldJTrump has. As well as the #EdificeComplex.

The Marcos model seems likely to be followed here, the one possible fly in the ointment being #PresidentVance.

How much of the #history of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos is repeating with #DonaldJTrump and #MelaniaTrump ?

A quick bit of research reveals that almost no-one has yet picked up the idea of "edifice complex" and applied it to Trump.

Yet we have everything from a gilded Lincoln toilet through this recently proposed Golden Arch to the Eppstein Memorial Ballroom.

And it's hats instead of shoes.

Today in Labor History January 30, 1970: 20,000 people rioted in Manila. They were protesting the regime of US-backed dictator Ferdinand Marcos after his State of the Nation address. Over 2,000 attempted to storm the US embassy chanting “Down with imperialism!” Riot police and soldiers beat protesters with truncheons and rifle butts. At least 50 people were hospitalized and at least six died. Riots continued throughout the year. They were part of the First Quarter Storm.

In 1986, after ongoing protests, Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos begged President Ronald Regan for advice. Regan told him to “cut and cut cleanly.” That evening, Marcos and his wife Imelda fled the nation aboard a U.S. air force plane, after 20 years of rule. Plus, countless crates of shoes. The Marcos’s hold the Guinness record for the largest ever theft from a government. Although Grifter-in-chief Trump seems dead set on trying to break that record.

Speaking of which, if you are shocked and appalled that Americans could be stupid enough to reelect Trump, consider that the people of the Philippines somehow “forgot” about the years of brutal dictatorship by Marcos and elected his son Bongbong, who currently wants to collaborate with Trump to get foreign aid flowing again, so he can continue his family tradition of violent domestic repression.

#FerdinandMarcos ruled the #Philippines for more than 20 years, most of that as a dictator under #MartialLaw (with US support). The #FirstQuarterStorm in 1970 had memorable acts of resistance, like crashing a fire engine through #Malacañang palace gates #ThisDayInHistory in 1970.

Today in Labor History December 6, 1984: Children picketed the Mendiola Bridge in Manila, Philippines, demanding the release of their parents, who were being held as political prisoners by the U.S.-supported Marcos regime. In 1987, soldiers opened fire on protesters on Mendiola Street, killing 13 and injuring hundreds. In 1970, the Battle of Mendiola Bridge occurred when troops opened fire on student protesters, killing 4.
