We got home from the cast party today to find that our eldest feral, Victoria, had gone the Rainbow Bridge. It was not unexpected. We don't know how old she was for sure, but the three kittens who showed up with her are 11. She was probably 15 or 16.

She and those kittens were our first TNR all those years ago. She was an opinionated, tiny, long-haired black cat who would not come very close to us at all. She was chubby and hissy.

In the last year, she got very thin, and started letting us pet her. She let me brush her. This morning, she let me clean her face with a damp paper towel. She only picked at her food. We knew. Before we left, I told her that I loved her, and it was okay to go.

When we came home, she was lying on the sidewalk in the place she liked to sun herself. She left on her own terms, napping in her favorite spot.

Still, it hurts. We love our ferals, whether or not we can touch them. And she was the wee matriarch of our yard.
