We're putting out a request to fedi admins to require manual approval of signups. Many of the issues with spam, trolls, and scam accounts the fedi has rn are because they are exploiting the well-meaning instances with open signups to behave poorly.

Our primary concerns:

1) Open signups enable harassment of everyone. But marginalized groups are disproportionately targeted.

2) Open signups create a lot of extra work for fedi moderators and admins, who end up playing "chase the ahole" instead of working on their communities.

3) Abuse of open signups leads to a less friendly fedi, driving ppl away for other services. We know that there's a double standard there, but it doesnt change the effect.

4) Abuse of open signups hurts the rep of otherwise friendly instances, especially when they're used to mass register and harass.

Requiring even a brief vibe check before people are allowed to join does a few things. First, it removes the instant gratification the ick ppl are seeking when they sign up. Second, it screens for obv troll or not behavior. And lastly, it makes the fedi a much less icky place for everyone.

Please won't you consider requiring account approvals?

Hey moderators of Mastodon... is there a way to import a list of problem users to ban them as a group at the instance lvl? We ask because we see a few very prolific, very obnoxious serial block evaders come up on the reg. It would be great to create a shareable list to allow mods to ban them with a click.

ali525-q.hf.space seems to be made entirely for someone to repeatedly spam a claim that they are a Palestinian requesting money. Users, keep in mind that this is a very easy #scam as there is no way for moderation to confirm that these people are who they say they are, and it is unlikely.

Fellow #FediMods, feel free to check this instance, and correct me if I missed something, but as of now, I have suspended the instance as a spam vector and will be putting it on the next release of the public blocklist.

#Fedi #PSA: My last message garnered a spam from a bot, claiming I would get $$ for posts receiving more than 10 likes.

Any bot offering money for popularity is almost certainly spying on the #Fediverse.

#Fedizens: is there an appropriate response to this kind of action? Yes, I blocked @verifnoootiff at mastodon.world. But who is running it? and why?

neondystopia.world is an instance that values freedom of expression and equity above all else, something that I thought a devout christian like yourself would have valued. After all, Jesus too was prosecuted for his expression. We have fair and equitable guidelines for our users and moderators, ensuring that any reports filed are compared against our own rules and that of the instance the report originated from. We even investigate reports on staff independently to ensure they are peer reviewed and free from bias. We go above and beyond what most do to ensure that we maintain a comfortable and inclusive environment by carefully balancing free expression with fairness and equity. Choosing instead to deal with people on a case-by-case basis rather than blanket banning entire instances.

I don't take slander of our instance lightly, and wanted to leave you with a scripture in hope that you may reflect on your decision.

Matthew 7:1-5 “*Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
