Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden cont'd. I saw this tree on the way out the gate-- and hurriedly snapped this photo to confirm that it's a Wollemi pine (Wollemi nobilis). Native to Australia, it was only discovered in the 1990s in a remote valley in NSW, and critically endangered. Often called a "living fossil," it's part of an ancient lineage of trees and related to the Monkey Puzzle tree of Patagonia.

Rhododendron Soecies Botanical Garden cont'd. It looks so very tropical, but this small tree is reasonably hardy in the maritime #PNW. It's a Schefflera, a genus best known as #houseplants. The label says Schefflera taiwanensis, but I'm pretty sure it's the same as S. taiwaniana, synonymous with Heptapleurum taiwanianum. I've had a couple different Schefflera species in my garden, but this one has done the best for me.

This is the trunk of a Japanese Stewartia (Stewartia pseudocamellia), which is just an outstanding landscape plant. Related to actual Camellias, it has similarly-shaped flowers in the spring; the foliage is also similar to that of a Camellia but is deciduous. And even in the winter there's this spectacular exfoliating bark. This is a big old specimen.

As I walked past this plant I first assumed it was a bug unruly yew, but it's not, it's a #Rhododendron. Rhododendron roxieanum var oreonates, native to Southern China. Those buds will become white flowers in May or June.

I made a trip to the #Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden the other day, as happened to be in #federalway Washington. It's off season so not much is blooming. Most people think of rhodies as fussy old fashioned show off plants your grandma liked. Those are cultivars bred for blooms. There are some 1000 species of rhododendrons in the wild (across 4 continents plus New Guinea) and some of them are pretty wild indeed. Here's some very mossy rhododendrons. #Gardening #mosstodon

Light Rail Federal Way Extension Accessibility Tour

Sound Transit hosted a tour of the three new light rail stations focusing on highlighting the accessibility features. A few of us from Highline's Access Services department were invited to join the festivities. We started at Federal Way and rode up to the Star Lake and Kent Des Moines stations, stopping at each for about 20 minutes to explore.
