She is pulled from her peaceful life back into a war-torn world by a magical amulet that leads her to confront her past and journey through the six kingdoms of Aros. What occurs along the way are threats of war, fighting factions, and a quest to fulfill her calling. Lockett does a fantastic job of setting up lush worlds for the reader to explore in the novel. The writing is very detailed with an immersive feel (which is essential for fantasy novels) and transports the reader to each new kingdom Kadara discovers. Each place is met with friends and foe, that not only keep Kadara on the path needed but also serve as a challenge needed to overcome. She is presented with many mental and physical obstacles that make her reflect on her life's purpose. Though the narrative is fast-paced, the tone of the story makes the story move at a gradual pace. The first novel only covers part of Kadara's journey and leaves the ending open for what steps she must take next. I think because there are so many names, kingdoms, and places in the story it would benefit from a glossary in addition to a map for the next installment. I would recommend this story for readers who love a good fantasy story filled with heroes, dragons, and a journey of strength.
