Smith: “Once several weeks old and weaned from their mother’s milk, elephant seal pups are abandoned by their parents on shore, left to navigate life alone. On Sea Lion Island in the Falklands, I watched dozens of them clamber over one another in shallow rockpools, awkwardly learning to swim, and quite engaging to my presence. I’d come here for this moment, to witness and photograph their first solo lessons in life.”

I lay flat on the shore to capture both the dramatic sky and the reflections in the wet sand. When one of the penguins started trumpeting and pointing its head towards the clouds, it felt to me like a celebration of life, a triumph over the dangers of traversing the vast ocean in search of food.” Volunteer Point, Falkland Islands (Malvinas).

Karlsruher Historiker in der Antarktis

Im Januar und Februar dieses Jahres fuhr PD Dr. Ole Sparenberg als Experte und Lektor auf seiner zweiten Reise mit einem Kreuzfahrtschiff in die #Antarktis🐧 . Auf der Reise, die von Argentinien über die Falkland Inseln, Süd-Georgien, das Wedell-Meer und die Antarktische Halbinsel nach Chile führte, hielt er Vorträge zur Geschichte der Region und begleitete Besuchergruppen bei Landausflügen. Neben atemberaubenden Landschaften 🏔️ und einer faszinierenden 🐳 Tierwelt bietet diese Region auch eine vielfältige Geschichte, die u.a. den #Walfang, die #Polarforschung und politische Konflikte wie den #Falkland-Krieg von 1982 umfasst.
