Small falcon with distinctive male plumage: gray head, rusty back, gray tail with broad black tip. Female is brownish above, with barring on the back, wings, and tail. Note rather pointed wingtips (unlike rounded wings of Accipiter hawks), and distinct dark spotting on the breast. Inhabits open and lightly wooded country, farmlands, grasslands, and heathlands; often seen over grassy areas beside roads and at airports. Perches on wires and posts, and typically hunts by hovering, at times fairly high overhead. Very similar to Lesser Kestrel.

Tuulihaukka ja taidonnäyte sähkönjakelusta! – Kestrel and a masterpiece of electricity distribution!
Tämä sähkötolppa on ollut yksi tuulihaukan mielipaikoista istua ja tähän se lensi ruokailun jälkeen. En ole ikinä nähnyt näin monimutkaisia kytkentöjä :-)... Maalaisrakennusten pihapiirissä ehkä myös saalistusonni on hyvä.

This electricity pole has been one of the kestrel's favorite places to sit, and this is where it flew after eating. I've never seen such complicated connections. :-)... Perhaps hunting luck is also good in the courtyards of farm buildings.

Tuulihaukan hyvä saalistusonni – Kestrel's good hunting luck
Tuulihaukka on viihtynyt maalaismaisemissa ja saanut jyrsijöitä saaliikseen. Se kyttää korkeissa koivuissa ja näkee ilmeisesti jo kaukaa, jos lumen päällä näkyy liikettä. Kuvista voi nähdä, että jyrsijän karva lentelee syönnin ohessa, joten lintu nyppii sitä pois. Samojen laajojen peltoalueiden reunamilla kyttää myös hiirihaukka.

The kestrel has thrived in rural landscapes and has caught rodents. It is hovering in the tall birches and can apparently see from afar if there is movement on the snow. The pictures show that the rodent's hair flies while eating, so the bird plucks it off. The buzzard also hunts on the edges of the same large fields.

Päivän outolintu: tuulihaukka – Strange bird of the day: kestrel
Lintulaji muuttaa talvehtimaan elo-syyskuun taitteessa Keski- ja Etelä-Eurooppaan ja Pohjois-Afrikkaan, joten on harvinainen näky talvella. Varsinkin nyt, kun on ollut hyvin kylmä pakkasjakso pitkään Etelä-Suomessakin. Joitakin lintuja kuitenkin jää hyvinä myyrävuosina (myös hiirihaukkoja), joten ehkä nyt on sellainen vuosi. Tuulihaukkaa hätyytteli pari harakkaa, mutta näytti onnistuvan hyvin saalistuksessaan.

The bird species migrates to winter in Central and Southern Europe and North Africa in August-September, so it is a rare sight in winter. Especially now, when there has been a very cold period of frost for a long time even in Southern Finland. However, some birds remain in good vole years (including buzzards), so perhaps this is such a year. The kestrel was disturbed by a couple of magpies, but seemed to be successful in its hunting.
