"Je vais montrer les photos de la hache, la cafetière, et le presse purée à mes frères et soeur pour savoir s'ils se souviennent."

Latifa Longovicienne d'origine marocaine, son père est arrivé à Longwy pour le travail à l'usine, il a appris à lire et à écrire par lui-même et a ouvert un garage de mécanique en plus de son travail à l'usine.
Latifa est née en France, elle me dit qu'elle prend le meilleur de la culture française et celle de ses parents du Maroc.
Quand je lui ai dit que je me sentais chez moi en France, mon pays d'accueil, elle a répondu que c'était normal, qu'il y avait beaucoup de points communs entre les deux pays.

Elle m'a éclairé sur un point très intéressant : le rôle de la mixité sociale et "ethnique" à l'école publique dans l'intégration des enfants d'immigrés. L'école qu'elle a connu enfant, et qui a eu un rôle majeur dans son intégration et celle de ses frères et sœurs.
Latifa est très engagée dans la vie de Longwy et celle du quartier Gouraincourt, elle a notamment créé une association pour aider les étudiants étrangers de l'IUT, et m'a parlé de la mise en place de projets autour de la photographie, sa passion.

[plus d’infos sur notre projet] La ville de Longwy a une histoire intimement liée avec celle de la sidérurgie. Ville des luttes ouvrières, ville de migration. Il ne reste aujourd’hui presque plus de trace de cette histoire. De janvier à juin 2021 nous réaliserons avec Nabila Halim un travail photographique et sonore avec les habitant•e•s de Longwy et les 4e D du collège Vauban autour de la thématique de la migration. Cette belle aventure est possible grâce à l’association Caranusca et la ville de Longwy.

[Some information about our project]: The history of Longwy is closely linked to that of the steel industry. A town of workers' struggles, a town of migration. Today, almost no trace of this history remains. From January to June 2021, together with Nabila Halim, we will carry out a photographic and sound project with the residents of Longwy and students of Vauban Middle School, exploring the theme of migration. This wonderful adventure is made possible thanks to the Caranusca Association and the city of Longwy.

I still cannot explain this fascination I have for this laid-down blast furnace. The last vestige of a period so vivid in the memories of the residents I met.

[journal de terrain, Longwy, semaine 4] visite du lieu d’exposition 

L’exposition de ce projet, mais aussi celui du « laboratoire proxemique » de Sarah Monnier et Noémie Flageul, aura lieu à la mairie de Longwy Haut. Visite de ce lieu incroyable ce matin. Hâte de réfléchir aux formes que prendra le projet pour s’adapter au lieu ! 
Nous avons appris lors de notre première rencontre avec un couple issue de l’immigration italienne (cf le post suivant) que cette même mairie abritait la radio pirate « Lorraine coeur d’acier » durant les grandes manifestations de 1978.

[field note, Longwy: week 4] Visit to the exhibition space
The exhibition of this project, as well as the exhibition of Sarah Monnier and Noémie Flageul's ‘proxemics laboratory’, will take place at the Mairie de Longwy Haut. We visited this incredible building this morning. We can't wait to think about how the project will adapt to the site! 
During our first meeting with a couple of Italian immigrants (see next post), we learned that this same place was home to the pirate radio station ‘Lorraine coeur d'acier’ during the major protests of 1978.

[journal de terrain, Longwy, semaine 3] La découverte 


J’aime commencer une nouvelle résidence, rencontrer un lieu pour les premières fois, amorcer un nouveau terrain. Tout semble incroyable, nouveau. Incapable de différencier le quotidien, de l’anecdotique, de l’incroyable, tout est surprenant. La moindre trace est sujette à interprétation, la moindre trace est un indice (souvent trompeur) pour tenter de comprendre ce territoire nouveau.

[field note, Longwy: week 3] Discovery
Discovery I love starting a new residency, meeting a place for the first time, starting a new field. Everything seems incredible, new. Unable to differentiate between the everyday, the anecdotal, the incredible, everything is surprising. The slightest sign is open to interpretation, the slightest sign is a clue (often misleading) to trying to understand this new territory.

[journal de terrain, Longwy, semaine 3] Se perdre, vous retrouver. 
J’ai rendez-vous à 14h avec l’association ARPA. Après 20 minutes à chercher un chemin entre les remparts, bloquée à Longwy Haut, je retourne sur mes pas. 
Je croise une voiture avec un couple à l’intérieur. Je leur demande comment passer les remparts. 
Très gentils, ils me proposent de me déposer car ils vont dans le même quartier que moi. 
En discutant durant le chemin, nous nous rendons compte que nous avons rendez vous ensemble pour nous rencontrer ! 
Merci pour votre belle générosité et sympathie ! Merci également à l’association ARPA qui m’a accueillie, et deux heures durant, m’a raconté de beaux souvenirs, témoignages et de belles histoires sur Longwy. Et surtout, merci pour votre aide et votre soutien, car grâce à vous, nous aurons la chance d’écouter encore plein de ces histoires

[field note, Longwy: day 3] Getting lost, finding yourself.
I have an appointment at 2:00 PM with the ARPA association. After 20 minutes searching for a path between the ramparts, stuck in Longwy Haut, I retrace my steps.
I come across a car with a couple inside. I ask them how to get past the ramparts.
Very kind, they offer to drop me off since they’re heading to the same neighborhood.
As we chat along the way, we realize we have the same appointment to meet each other!
Thank you for your wonderful generosity and kindness! A big thank you also to the ARPA association, who welcomed me and spent two hours sharing beautiful memories, testimonies, and stories about Longwy. And above all, thank you for your help and support, because thanks to you, we’ll have the chance to hear many more of these stories.
