Antigo engenho de açúcar na época do Brasil Colonial, suas terras se estendiam até as margens da atual Rodrigo de Freitas - conhecida pelos indígenas como Sacopenapã, ou "lagoa de raízes chatas" em Tupi-Guarani. Em meados do século XIX, um nobre inglês compra parte das terras, e contrata em 1840 o paisagista inglês John Tyndale para projetar um jardim de estilo romântico nos moldes das quintas europeias.
Em 1859, parte da fazenda passa a ser propriedade de Antônio Martins Lage. Os anos se passam e a chácara vai parar em outras mãos, mas em 1920 um neto de Antônio Martins Lage a compra. Amante das artes, o empresário Henrique Lage se casa com a cantora lírica italiana, Gabriela Besanzoni. Para agradar a artista manda construir uma “Vila Romana” e reformula parte do projeto paisagístico.
A former sugar mill during the colonial period of Brazil, its lands extended to the banks of the current Rodrigo de Freitas - known by the indigenous people as Sacopenapã, or "flat-rooted lagoon" in Tupi-Guarani. In the mid-19th century, an English nobleman bought part of the land and, in 1840, hired the English landscaper John Tyndale to design a romantic-style garden modeled on European farms.
In 1859, part of the farm became the property of Antônio Martins Lage. Years passed and the farm fell into other hands, but in 1920 a grandson of Antônio Martins Lage bought it. A lover of the arts, the businessman Henrique Lage married the Italian opera singer Gabriela Besanzoni. To please the artist, he ordered the construction of a "Roman Villa" and redesigned part of the landscaping project.
