Northern Flickers may not be the most colourful of the woodpeckers, but they are the most accommodating when it comes to photography. They get a lot of their food from the ground rather than from trees, so they're easy to spot, no neck strain and they are not shy, so if you fumble the first shot you'll probably get another try.

I had seen a sooty grouse once before meeting this one, but it was very high up in a tree and I did not get to see it flash its yellow "come hither" patch or the "you are powerless to resist me" neon eyebrows. combine that with its strange and oddly hypnotic mating call, and you've got one fancy-ass fowl.

Steller's Jay - My gateway bird. I met my first one about three years ago, There he was, just sitting on a branch about three feet away from me - all blue and beautiful and full of attitude. I hadn't even known they existed. It made me wonder what else I could see if I started paying attention. A whole new world, it turns out.

We had a pretty cool visitor in the yard this afternoon. A Northern Pygmy Owl. It’s super small and super cute. But also an effective predator.

The cat is out of the bag (literally) that this part of #TheTrail is on BC’s old #KettleValleyRailway, but it is not the Kettle Valley Rail Trail … so here comes the next hint …

This part of the KVR was the most difficult section of the railway to build, and was the most expensive mile of track built anywhere in the world at the time. Care to harbour a guess as to what section of the #TransCanadaTrail this is?

We really need to slow down some days and appreciate where we get to call home. Over time it is easy to take BC's west coast for granted as we get stuck in the daily routine. Stop, soak it up & enjoy💚 #vancouverIsland #vancouver #ycc #canada #britishcolumbia #explorebc #explorecanada #salishsea

We really need to slow down some days and appreciate where we get to call home. Over time it is easy to take the west coast of British Columbia for granted as we get stuck in the daily routine. This is my public service announcement to take a pause, soak it up and bask in a moment of gratitude.
