Remembering Russell Albion Meyer (1922-2004), the influential American film director, producer, screenwriter, cinematographer, editor and glamour photographer, born in Oakland #OnThisDay. He evolved from nudie cuties and a mid-60s "Gothic" period (capped by Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! in 1965) to mockumentaries, gaudy melodramas, blaxploitation and the satirical, horror-inflected Roger Ebert-scripted Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) for 20th Century Fox.
