Ghana Immigration Service Trains Officers Ahead of Nationwide E-Visa Rollout

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) is preparing for the nationwide launch of Ghana's electronic visa (e-visa) system, scheduled for May 25, 2026. To ensure smooth implementation, GIS recently conducted a two-day training program in Accra, bringing together 40 officers from various immigration control points across the country. The training focused on equipping officers with the necessary skills to manage the fully digital platform, covering system workflows, document verification, monitoring procedures, and online payment processes. The e-visa system aims to simplify visa applications for foreign nationals, improve passenger processing, enhance security, and facilitate better data collection for national planning and international cooperation. Acting Deputy Comptroller-General Faisal Disu emphasized the importance of discipline, professionalism, data protection, and responsible handling of traveler information. The initiative is expected to promote transparency, accountability, and integrity within GIS operations. By providing a user-friendly and efficient interface for visitors, the system also seeks to boost tourism, business, and investment in Ghana. GIS management has reiterated its commitment to continuous capacity building, system upgrades, and monitoring mechanisms to ensure proper implementation of the e-visa system.

Calls for the ICO to investigate the eVisa scheme have gone unheard.

ORG flagged that the Home Office failed to assess the risks of a digital-only scheme, exposing migrants to data errors and technical failures that impact their immigration status.

Rights fall apart without an effective regulator.

UK data watchdog accused of dragging feet on eVisa investigation

Despite longstanding data protection issues with the Home Office’s electronic visa system being flagged five months ago, the UK’s data regulator is yet to take any action

19 civil society groups wrote to the ICO last year, warning of widespread data errors, inaccessible design and systemic technical failures with eVisas.

This has left migrants facing real difficulties in their day-to-day lives.

As an I T professional with fifty years experience, I came here to say exactly that. It’s bizarre that faced with concrete evidence that the system has exactly “lost, stolen or tampered with” this woman’s digital status, they still say “there are no wider issues around the system”.
I fear we are at the beginning or another Post Office Horizon scandal.

Plowing ahead with a system riddled with technical and data errors risks creating another Windrush scandal.

Rather than being dragged to court, the UK government could've allowed physical documents as well as digital proof of the right to be in the UK.

The eVisa judicial review will hear that the digital and online-only scheme is unlawful.

Without a physical copy of their immigration status, migrants are at risk of losing access to housing, services and work.

Despite being warned since before implementation, the UK Home Office has done nothing.
