#TwinCities Unions Planning ‘Largest US #RentStrike in 100+ Years’ as #ICEOccupation Drives #EvictionCrisis

“Tenants in #Minnesota are in a crisis,” said #Minneapolis City Council Member #AishaChughtai. “The federal invasion forced many of our neighbors to stay home and devastated our #LocalEconomy.”

Stephen Prager, Feb 17, 2026

"Tenant and labor unions in Minneapolis and St. Paul have announced plans to carry out what they said would be the 'largest rent strike in the United States in the last 100 years.'

"Beginning on #March1, if Democratic Minnesota Gov. #TimWalz does not meet their urgent demands for an #EvictionMoratorium and #RentRelief, a coalition of nearly 26,000 workers has pledged to withhold rent, which they said could create a massive economic disruption.

"The plans were announced on Tuesday by the tenants union #TwinCitiesTenants, which is joined by five labor unions: Service Employees International Union (#SEIU) Local 26, SEIU Healthcare Minnesota/Iowa, UNITE HERE Local 17, the Amalgamated Transit Union (#ATU) 1005, and Communication Workers of America (#CWA) 7250.

"They argued that a freeze on rents is desperately needed after 'nearly three months of federal occupation' under President Donald #Trump’s '#OperationMetroSurge,' which sent nearly 3,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (#ICE) and other immigration agents to the area, resulting in multiple fatal shootings and a wave of #CivilRights violations, including explicit #RacialProfiling."

Common Dreams

Early this week I saw community activist begining to raise the alarm about the rising risk of evictions in Minneapolis.

With ICE sntatching people at work or on their way to or from work its pretty clear ICE intends for this to be something of a racist ecnomic embargo.

MPLS Council man Jason Chavez has begun echoing those concerns and is starting to fight for an eviction moratorium in Minneapolis.

End of US ban poised to lead to ‘tsunami’ of evictions

Some 750,000 US households could be evicted across the United States before the end of the year, global investment firm Goldman Sachs estimates.

With the US Supreme Court ending the country’s national moratorium on evictions on August 26, hundreds of thousands of renters could soon find themselves in the same position as Gray and her family – with nowhere to live.

While Congress could still revive the national eviction ban legislatively and a handful of states still have individual eviction moratoria in place, the global investment firm Goldman Sachs estimates that roughly 750,000 households could be evicted across the country before the end of the year.

Apparently it's easier to envision a world in which a 3 million people are turned out onto the streets than one in which a reasonable accomodation between tenants, landlords, and banks, where the investors holding the mortgage-backed securities take a mild haircut.

We hope for the sake of our American friends that the #EvictionMoratorium is not ended in full.

If 15% of the pre-pandemic rent needs to be paid. That would be more than enough for now.

Are you able to elaborate on details?

If you support evictions during a pandemic then you support mass murder. There is no reasonable excuse.

Protests & anti-eviction actions expected nationwide. Demand more from the government not the tenants. #EvictionCrisis #EvictionMoratorium
