I was today's years old when I learned about the #eurkey keyboard layout. Seems very nice for a German programmer writing mostly English. And it's available in KDE Plasma's settings out of the box.

What's not available out of the box is a physical keyboard to match it. But programming with a German one is so inconvenient, I'm considering just learning the new layout by heart now. We'll see how that goes. Passwords in muscle memory might be a challenge. 😄

Auf meiner Browser Journey bin ich mittlerweile bei Comet, also zum testen, angekommen und was soll ich sagen leider nicht wirklich verträglich mit EurKey layout. Ansonsten wenn man nicht in deutscher Sprache schreibt geht es eigentlich. Ich hoffe sehr das die die Shortcuts bald freiwählbar hinbekommen. #Comet #Perplexity #browser #eurkey

@tuxedocomputers Habt ihr für individuelle Tastaturlayouts (z.B. für ein InfinityBook Pro 14 oder Sirius 16) zufällig schon #Eurkey verfügbar oder müsste das erst erstellt werden (durch Kunde bzw. gegen Bezahlung)?

Edit: ich rede natürlich vom aufgelaserten/gedruckten grafischen Layout, nicht der Software-Belegung 🤭

If you're - like me - a software developer from Europe, and/or opted for a US #keyboard for other reasons, you may have come across "US International": It's a variety of the layout that maintains all the benefits, particularly typing out special characters with way less effort, but also allows to access your native language's specialties, e.g umlauts, without awkwardly switching layouts mid-sentence.
Just recently now, a coworker showed me #EurKEY. It is pretty similar, but with some derivations from US Intl that make it even more useful to me (and probably to you), e.g. I can now use „ and “ again. Here it is: https://eurkey.steffen.bruentjen.eu/layout.html

Intro

EurKEY is a multilingual keyboard layout which is intended for Europeans, programmers and translators and was developed by Steffen Brüntjen and published under the GPL free software license. It is available for common desktop operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. (yes it was taken from Wikipedia)

It has multiple features that allow you to type different letters (such as ä á à â å (and other letters with these diacritics) œ æ ij (whatever this is) ß Đ), Greek letters (α Σ π etc.), math symbols (√ ∞ ≡ ∃ ∠ ∟ ∂ etc.) and even arrows and trademark symbols (←↓↙↘ ⇓⇐ ™ © ® etc.)

Installing

  • Go to the Download page and download 1.3 version (even if it’s beta). If you have problems, you can find this version here (3s)
  • Decompress the zip folder and run setup.exe
  • After that you might see it in the keyboard layout menu (WIN + SPACE for Windows, I don’t know the rest)
  • For it to work properly, you have to restart your computer/sign out
  • After that you are ready. For tips look at the pdf from the download page (i recommend looking for the one with the parenthesis next to it)

    • Features

  • By pressing altGr (right alt) or CTRL+LEFT ALT you can get different characters like ß þ ij ø œ (Yea you can see here everything)
  • By pressing altGr + M you get all greek letters such as π and αλφα
  • By pressing altGr + shift + M you get math symbols such as ∞ and √ and ≈
  • By pressing altGr + \ you get other symbols such as № ½ ⅓ § © ™ ↓ ⇒ etc

    • Note: You can type superscript and subscript with this, but for me (I use 3s) I have to use altGr+6 (for super script) and altGr+shift+6 (for subscript) instead of altGr+M and altGr+shift+M as it is shown in the pdf (plus you have to use normal parenthesis instead of square parenthesis and brackets)

    Conclusion

    I personally think that this is a must if you are obsessed with symbols, or you have your mobile keyboard so customized you want your pc’s too (#relatable)

    Irgendwann hab ich mal mein #Keyboard-#Layout überall auf #EurKey vereinheitlicht.

    Das ist gut, weil qwerty-Keyboards viel besser kaufbar sind als qwertz (vor allem wenn man seltenere Formate UND taugliche Switches will) und auch weil viele Sonderzeichen die ich für Shell/Quellcode so brauche, direkter/erreichbarer sind.

    Momentan nerven mich zwei Dinge:
    - º ist nicht aufgedruckt, ich such es ab und zu
    - hab ein einzelnes Keyboard mit Ziffernblock… da muss ich mal irgendwann . durch , ersetzen
