Familial estrangement is not a new phenomenon. It just looked different with our own parents and their parents; In my own experience, it's very common for adults my mothers and fathers age (50's) to not see their parents except on holidays like Christmas, they don't call or message their parents every day, or even every week, they often live far from their parents as well. That is how their generation has decided to distance and deal with their own trauma...
