The #VernalEquinox (in the #NorthernHemisphere) will occur in about an hour and halfโ€™s time of positing at 09:01Z. The #Sun will be precisely overhead at noon on the #Equator just off the coast of #Somalia when this happens. For the whole planet, #day and #night will be of equal length (as makes no odds) and #Sunrise will be due #East and #Sunset will be due #West. Roll on #Spring.

#Equinox

So for me, the #LAFire is just another reminder that I have to step up my rhetoric regarding #refugees -- because there will be #climate refugees, not from the US, but from the global south.

Countries in the #Mediterranean let alone nation states and island states in or around the #equator will be in danger of great climate change issues.

It's coming ya'll, so prepare yourself to fight #bigots, #racists and other idiots by reminding them that our convenience is what lead us here.

40 years ago today, aboard RRS Discovery III on my first trip to the Southern Ocean and #Antarctica, we crossed the #Equator into the Southern Hemisphere. King Neptune's court convened on the foredeck to charge and punish all of us newcomers, after which we were baptised in a makeshift pool.

Two of the photos here show me receiving my punishment and then using the shower in the pool to try wash off some of the sticky gunk that had been poured over my head. I would credit the photographer if I could remember who I lent my camera to.

I remember that I was charged with "duplicity", on the basis that I had asked to make several dozen photocopies of seismic observer's logsheet templates I had designed following the preceding trials.

@rodhilton IMO, nobody in the southern hemisphere, or living close to the #equator wants to hike all the way to the #US

They'd much rather live and prosper right where they are.

However, due to a) climate change and b) Americans' love of drugs, they're left with few options.

They didn't cause a) and don't have a b) problem. Yet, they're impacted by both.

Other countries, mostly autocratic regimes, try to empower the southern countries with the ability to be enterprising with a + b endeavors.

Alas, those with great power choose b) every time since it's easy money. Indenturing any in favor of fixing a, so b remains empowered.

1. Stop blaming regimes for aiding the south in being successful entrepreneurs, and 2. Stop blaming those wanting to join the party.

Just fix it, #congress

Or clear a path for those that actually want to!

You know, time to "lead, follow, or get out of the way!" - #thomasPaine

On May 28, 2017 this was posted to Instagram: "An old maritime shipboard tradition was to celebrate crewmembers' and passengers' first passages over the equator or the international dateline. Like many maritime traditions, it was adopted by the aviation industry. On transoceanic flights, certificates were given out to passengers commemorating a crossing of the equator. We have several in our collection, and here is one example which reads: "King Neptune Order of the equatorial air voyagers Known all men by these presents That John M. Burnard Of San Francisco. California. U.S.A. Having this gallantly crossed our equator in a skyship now becomes a freeman of the air and all rights, benefits and perquisites reserved for those who cross between the hemispheres in airliners are hereby graciously bestowed. All ye powers and dominions subject to his most puissant majesty Neptune take note." Image: Qantas Airways souvenir certificate, equator crossing, 1964. Gift of John M. balance of #phytoplankton populations in sea is shifting as result of human-induced #climatechange altering #oceans in profound ways. When u picture ocean you might imagine sparkling turquoise waters but recent research suggests swathes of world's #oceans may in fact b turning greener. leading culprit might be #climat change. while some waters r becoming more green particularly in low latitudes near the #equator others are growing more #blue as global #temperatures rise. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240517-are-the-oceans-changing-colour-because-of-climate-change
