A looming global threat: H5N1 virus decimates wildlife, disrupts ecosystems and endangers human health

We live in an era when human activities are negatively modifying the world at alarming rates. We are experiencing a massive species extinction due to environmental damage caused by human land use change, overexploitation, pollution, climate change, and the introduction of invasive species.

Immunity against seasonal H1N1 flu reduces bird flu severity in ferrets, study suggests

Pre-existing immunity against seasonal H1N1 flu might help explain why most reported human cases of H5N1 bird flu in the U.S. have not resulted in lethal outcomes, suggests a new study by University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Emory University researchers. The report was published in Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Possible evidence of windborne H5N1 viral infections in chickens

A team of government veterinarians with the State Veterinary Institute Prague in Czechoslovakia has found possible evidence of windborne H5N1 infections in chickens. In their paper posted on the bioRxiv preprint server, the group describes how chickens in a closed environment became infected with the H5N1 virus despite no contact with other chickens, wild birds, or their feces, leaving the wind as the only likely source.

Bird flu has likely killed hundreds of birds in Massachusetts: 'Virus is widespread in the state'

The circulating bird flu has become "widespread" in the Bay State, as officials believe the virus has killed 500 to 1,000 wild birds across the region.

An epizootic of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H7N3 in a Mexican ecological reserve - Archives of Virology

In this case study, we describe an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus subtype H7N3 in an ecological reserve in Chiapas, Mexico, affecting captive and wild birds. The virus was detected mainly in plain chachalacas displaying respiratory and gastrointestinal clinical signs and death within 24 hours. Mortality in white-fronted parrots and a clay-colored thrush was also recorded. We describe control strategies implemented to prevent virus dissemination and active surveillance within the risk area. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the HPAI H7N3 virus detected in affected birds shared a close genetic relationship with Mexican H7N3 isolates from 2012.

Remember how SARS-CoV-2 emerged out of China's wild animal farms and traditional markets, and how the government there failed to prevent it, stop it, and investigate it seriously? (Yes, the lableakers are still 🤡.)

Well, the US government is doing the same with the avian influenza strain which are emerging as a large outbreak across multiple species, and among the US bird and cow farming sector. This avian influenza virus has also infected a mysterious amount of workers so far, possibly dozens, and it's just one bad day away from getting adaptations to become a new pandemic in humans (such as by mixing with pig influenza or with seasonal influenza).

Here's a long article showing a bit of the governmental failure and how that's tied to the meat industry and the "state within a state" which is the USDA:

“The functional intent was, nobody was allowed to talk to anyone,” says a Midwestern veterinary specialist. “That’s when our phones started ringing. That’s when we started putting it all together. It became very clear: Everything was on the down low, and that really hampered the response from the very beginning.”

While the meat industry is more "cool" about killing sick chickens, they abhor the idea of killing sick cows. It's a weirder instance of speciesism.

One Health? More like One Sickness. You know what it is.

Inside the Bungled Bird Flu Response, Where Profits Collide With Public Health

When dairy cows in Texas began falling ill with H5N1, alarmed veterinarians expected a fierce response to contain an outbreak with pandemic-sparking potential. Then politics—and, critics say, a key agency’s mandate to protect dairy-industry revenues—intervened.

HANOI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) — Two samples taken from dead tigers in southern Vietnam have tested positive for H5N1 bird flu virus, local media reported.

Twenty tigers and one leopard have died since early September at Mango Garden eco-resort in Dong Nai province.

The animals refused to eat, showed fatigue and had fever after having eaten chicken meat and chicken heads provided by a local company.

Phan Van Phuc, head of the Department of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control at the Dong Nai Center for Disease Control, said it was likely that the deceased tigers were infected with the H5N1 virus from infected chicken meat, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Authorities are tracing the origin of the chicken to determine the infection source, he said.
