alright, i think i'll make a detailed blog post about it eventually, but now that i've had it for a little while, i can safely say: do not buy the fairphone 6 running murena's /e/os.
i am having a miserable software experience right now. it's shocking that i had to pay more for this.
basic features are missing, some are completely broken. the latest one, and the one that is prompting me to write this, the straw that broke the rabbit's back: my wi-fi hotspot doesn't work, i turn it on and it turned itself off and it just writes error and that's it.
but wait! i used the screen recording feature to show the behavior to nitsa and that's how i figured out that the night light filter isn't just piss poor, no, it's actually broken!
like, i've been disappointing with the nightlight filter ever since i got this phone, because at its max intensity, it feels like i've bumped the colors slightly towards the red. like a bad lcd that has a red tint. but on the video, it looks like morning piss, really orangey brownish, the way it should be. which means that somewhere the software recognizes that it should be that way, enough to record it. but it doesn't translate to the display.
and here are other issues that i'm having software-wise with this phone.
- i don't have always on display. even weirder, if i look for it in the settings, via search, and i start typing ambient display, it will appear, and when i click on it, it takes me to where it should be, but it just isn't there.
- i don't have charge limit.
- the camera app is abysmal and you don't have access to the stock camera that you would get on the standard fairphone 6 even though you can do that on the fairphone 4 (and 5?) on /e/os.
- you can't choose the accent colors at all, nope, blue only. it's apparently an intended choice, which is even worse, because it's actually built in to AOSP, so now you're just taking features away.
- some apps flat-out don't work including some big banking apps, which was a really nice surprise to find out, thank god i was in the process of changing banks to one that, mercifully, works with this thing.
- animated wallpapers are broken.
- the launcher has some graphical issues with the wallpapers, where the cool blurry effect just doesn't work and just cuts off your wallpaper weirdly.
- the stock apps are really not good for the most part.
- you don't have fairphone moments, instead you have a switch that disables the microphone and camera, which you can't configure at all. which is awful because it's not like you'd want to use the camera on this thing anyway.
- speaking of the camera, you can't zoom! yes, the zoom feature is actually broken!
- i have some weird issues with my do not disturbs, which won't let me filter calls properly.
- i have some weird touchscreen issues where sometimes it's just not responsive enough, like at first i thought it was just me messing something up but no and it's really noticeable when it happens.
i have so many fucking issues, i can't even list them all. and again, i had to pay 50 bucks extra for the privilege of running this software, which quite frankly is awful. i don't give a damn if a patch is coming. this is basic shit that is not working.
i can't wait for the day where calyxos starts supporting this thing and i can finally escape this hell.
if you want this phone, i can't recommend this version of it. i just can't. this is simply unacceptable.
