2. Speicherplatz effizient nutzen: Versionierung, Komprimierung und gezielte Auswahl relevanter Daten verhindern unnötigen Ressourcenverbrauch.    3. Metadaten optimieren: Einheitliche Standards und durchdachte Metadaten erleichtern Auffindbarkeit und Wiederverwendung.    4. 5. Langzeitarchivierung bewusst steuern: Nur essenzielle Daten langfristig speichern und bestehende Infrastrukturen nutzen.   Finale Version vom 30.4.2025, nach Open Peer Review.

Back in the game! I am giving a talk at 1:30 today, as usual with an over-dramatic title "Why human civilization can't afford AI. An introduction to the environmental footprint of digital technologies, and why AI makes things worse" although it's a basic intro and I mainly cover topics I am not an expert in (let's go for some balls). Looking forward! #greeningDH #environmentalfootprint #ICT

[#EnvironmentalFootprint] The development of the Athena X-IFU instrument, the high-resolution X-ray #spectrometer that will be aboard ESA's #Athena space observatory in 2037, has an environmental cost.

An analysis of the instrument's lifecycle has identified the main items of energy costs, mobilization of mineral and metal resources, ...

For your consideration:
researchers have assessed that generating a single AI image requires the same amount of energy needed to fully charge your iPhone battery. Training an AI model also requires “626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, or the equivalent of around 300 round-trip flights between New York and San Francisco—nearly five times the lifetime emissions of the average car.”

First, it is based on experiences with applying the Product #EnvironmentalFootprint (#PEF) to buildings, particularly the protocol for systematic #HotspotAnalysis.

#SLiCE is further based on insights from EU Level(s) pilot phase and the requirement for #reporting both building material and energy inventories (i.e., LCI), and results of #LifeCycle impact assessment (LCIA) at different levels (e.g., by building elements or life cycle stages).

“…with #plastic production doubling every 15 years. The relatively low cost of #petroleum based polymers encourages their single use and #overconsumption. Synthetic plastics are recalcitrant to #biodegradation, and #mismanagement of plastic waste leads to their accumulation in the #ecosystem, resulting in a disastrous #environmentalfootprint.

The living things that feast on plastic

Scientists are scouring garbage sites around the world for bacteria, fungi and even insects that harbor enzymes that could be harnessed for breaking down various polymers. It’s early days, but if the efforts can be efficiently scaled-up, such biological recycling could put a dent in the plastic waste problem.

"Lookups take enormous numbers of queries these days. A support customer was asking why a lookup wasn’t completing within 3 seconds. The resolution process took 48 queries with a cold cache. Involved several CDNs and required fetching nameserver addresses in several different TLDs. There where no retries
in that count.
CNAME chains are expensive but we have a whole industry that has fallen in love with them."
