I've been reading Kate Williams's "Ambition and Desire" about Josephine de Beauharnais, (right after reading #englandsmistress about Emma, Lady Hamilton) and I'd sort of forgotten how short Napoleon's rule really was in the grand scheme of things, which in the face of tyranny is somewhat comforting.
Also did not realize his code turned women's rights back quite a bit in France as I don't think we spent much time on it in school 😤 #bookstodon #katewilliams
