Melissa Ragain on Petrocultures 2024

Ubiquity and concealment were twin themes of the gathering, which brought together researchers—many of whom are also activists—from across the humanities, arts, and social sciences to examine the role of fossil fuels in contemporary culture. The conference is the flagship event of the Petrocultures research group at the University of Alberta in Canada, founded in 2011 by Imre Szeman and Sheena Wilson.

Beginning historical research on a little book I am co-authoring called “Theory of the Battery” and this book is revelatory in terms of the interrelation of the material development of energy & the various forms of Enlightenment thought circulating in the late 18th/early 19th centuries. #energyhumanities #environmentalhumanities
#EnergyHumanities

I guess it’s #introduction time: I’m an English prof at Ohio State. I write & research in the areas of #environmentalhumanities, #energyhumanities & #literarystudies. My first home was #modernism & I wrote a book called The Extinct Scene: Late Modernism & Everyday Life (Columbia UP 2016). I am working on a book called Unnatural Attachments: Aesthetic Education & Ecological Crisis. I edit the Energy & Environment forum for Modernism/Modernity’s Print + platform (pitch me!). Into analog things.

Intro time! I’m an environmental anthropologist and writer in #Texas. My work explores cultural aspects of in/equality in energy transitions. I'm also a former medievalist. On weekends I binge genre fiction and explore green spaces with my partner and our pup.

I dig #Books, #Gardening, #PublicSpace, #Design, #Ethnography, #Theory, #STS, #PopCultureStudies. I advocate #Feminism, #AntiRacism and #ClimateJustice. Glad to be here!
