𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 — 𝟮𝟮 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱
Today we recognise and support over 70 million people worldwide who stutter. Stuttering is a communication difference that can include involuntary repetitions, prolongations, and blocks — and often brings physical effort, anxiety and social barriers. This year’s theme, “A Diverse Stuttering Community – Meeting Challenges With Strengths,” highlights the many ways people who stutter use resilience, creativity and community to communicate and belong.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀
- Raises public understanding so myths and stigma are reduced.
- Promotes early identification and appropriate support for children.
- Encourages inclusive workplaces, schools and healthcare settings.
- Connects people who stutter with peer groups, therapy options and resources.
- Reminds us that one approach does not fit all — personalised support matters.
𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀
- About 1% of the world’s population stutters; roughly 5% of children go through a period of stuttering.
- Around 80% of children who begin to stutter stop naturally; those who continue past early school years are more likely to persist.
- Male-to-female ratio: ~2:1 in children, ~4:1 in adults.
- Stuttering is neurological and variable — myths like “stuttering = nervousness” or “stutterers are less capable” are false and harmful.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆
- Listen patiently; don’t interrupt or finish sentences.
- Use inclusive language and avoid pity or undue emphasis on fluency.
- Share resources and stories that normalise stuttering.
- Support local stuttering associations, events and advocacy.
- Encourage early assessment and evidence-based therapy for children when needed.
