I'm quite annoyed with the video game industry and I barely buy any these days. I'm still rocking my PS4 and Switch 1 here. On the bright side, it allows me to play and appreciate what I have and I still have a few indies on my backlog.
One of them is Endling: Extinction is Forever. In this indie you play as a mother fox who is trying to find one of her kidnapped fox kit while trying to keep her other three kits alive. There is a lot of danger, however, and as the environment gets more polluted by humans, it becomes increasingly difficult to find food.
I don't do well with animal death and the kits can permanently die in this game, but thankfully Endling managed to keep things doable (I managed to keep them all alive, though I had a few close calls). The game still pulls on your heartstrings, there is a degree of urgency with needing to balance finding food with continuing the story and being back in your den by sunrise, and the environmental message isn't subtle. You see water getting polluted and a forest getting cut down around you while you're busy surviving. Most humans want to harm you. I thought this game was very impactful and one worth experiencing at least once, despite being a bit bleak. The stylistic art style is great and they told the story eithout any dialogue.
