Quite some time ago I installed a PEI print bed surface on my Ender-5 Pro. While I had a funny issue with it I can now confirm that it works great.

I cannot see any difference in bed adhesion while printing (which is a good thing because the stock bed surface of my printer also worked great). But after printing I just wait for the bed to cool down and the part comes right off, I can basically just take it.

Had to clamp the new surface down, because the stock magnet sheet is glued on and I don’t want to ruin my print bed – but it is a bit to weak to fully hold the new bed surface in place. I carefully tested and the clamps do not block the nozzle.

@FreeCAD It’s Friday already? Time flies.

This week I hustled my way through designing, prototyping, and printing a modular kitchen drawer inlay system that is specific to my kitchen drawer (and coincidentally maxes out my print bed).

The models are fully parameterized (even if all measurements are fixed and won’t change and nothing of this would fit anywhere else, but hey 🙃), the boxes fit on both types of struts, the struts are designed to fit the drawer, you simply put in the struts, adjust them and slot the box in.

The box uses custom anti-warping supports that can be easily snipped off after printing. They’re an afterthought and I took a nasty shortcut in the model to add them … Maybe I’ll properly re-do them someday.

The overhangs from the side walls over the slots don’t need support, my printer manages this well (phew!).

Overall, I’m happy how this project turned out.

Before, that drawer (admit it, we ALL have “that drawer”) was only a third usable, because the sides are open. Now it’s not only fully usable, but also organized.

One box is missing and still needs to be printed (it’s a 13 hours print and my printer needs babysitting for the first layer and before the side walls start printing).

Oh loooook, ma baby got new shoes! 🤪

We’ll see if they fit …

I experimented with custom supports (here: to prevent warping). Worked out perfectly well. It not only caused a much better and less error-prone first layer outline, but also actually prevented warping.

The object did not curl up in the middle parts, but only at the four outer corners a little.

Cleaner first layer, no warping, easier print, all of this because of 4 short 5mm wide one layer high lines in exchange for snipping a tiny bit of the print off later. I call this a success.

Also, not having the Z change in one of the corners, but in the middle results in the notch not having those nasty stringing tips as seen on the fourth photo.

But now that I have perfected the print, there is only one box left … 🙃

Call me scale, baby! ⚖️ 🙃

Long overdue re-calibration of my #Ender5Pro with the bed leveling knobs. Used a piece of chocolate bar wrapper cardboard to get a consistent height at the four adjustment points.

Since I use #BLtouch for distance, the manual calibration is only used for a leveled surface and not for bed-to-nozzle distance.

The Bed Level Visualizer confirmed it: a variation of 0.102mm from lowest to highest point just after one cycle of calibration (maybe 10 minutes, including confirmation).

That’s better than my last time after 2 hours.

… but also the good feeling when it’s finally “just printing” 🙃

It is possible to repair supports during a 9.5-hour print that has already been running for 4 hours …

The supports just came loose at 1 mm on the last layer of the bottom. I already had a test print in the trash that deliberately fits into the gap three times and happened to be 1 mm thick.

I used tape and glue stick for the first time … I hope the print bed isn't ruined now – the print definitely isn’t (apart from a few misaligned lines caused by pressing the repair parts onto the print bed. But it’s a utility item, so that’s acceptable).

It is now well past the “critical point” for failure, and I just have to wait two more hours while watching it on the webcam.

The print settings have already been adjusted for the second of these parts, with wider support and some measures to prevent warping.

Does anyone use medium format cameras?
If so what are you using.

I read today about people printing medium format bodies using asa filament.

@FreeCAD Yesterday I finally made a specific headphones holder. With this I can put my headphones on the bar of my monitor holder behind my monitor.

It’s freely rotatable and the print files contain a test ring that prints within a few minutes to check for clearance without having to re-print everything.

In hindsight, the 40% infill are a bit too much, but hey 🙃 It works exactly as I had in mind.
