Musk’s new Twitter policies helped spread Russian propaganda, E.U. says

A study commissioned by the European Commission found that “the reach and influence of Kremlin-backed accounts has grown further in the first half of 2023, driven in particular by the dismantling of Twitter’s safety standards.”

Just in case anyone was still running around out there believing Jack Dorsey was somehow a reasonable person who just got played by bad ol' Elon:

Your call whether you think he's a fan of #RFKJR because he *likes* his particular brand of political inanity, or whether it's a roundabout effort to delegitimize Democrats by boosting a candidate who would give Trump some serious competition for "most unhinged President" if he somehow managed to win.

Ex-Twitter leader Jack Dorsey endorses RFK Jr. for president

Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey appeared to endorse anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the Democratic presidential nomination over the weekend. Dorsey retweeted a video of Kennedy saying he could beat former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who announced his bid for the White House on Twitter last month. Dorsey captioned…

Twitter's team responsible for tweet limits left in November, when Elon Musk sent a midnight ultimatum telling staff to work "extremely hardcore."

Three tweets is more than Elon's twitter can allow? hahaha game over man, GAME OVER!! #ThreeTweets #ElonTwitter

@birchtree Most generous take I can come up with: they're desperate for revenue and throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. If there's too much backlash, they'll reverse course with the typical "we heard you and listened…" crap.

The underlying assumption seems to be that 'brands' (who often use the API via apps) will pay for access to an audience, and won't leave or have someone post manually. Don't think that's a safe assumption, but we'll see.

"Twitter might have had a reputation as a left-leaning workforce, but there had always been a faction that disapproved of its progressive ideals. On Slack, some of these workers had formed a channel called #i-dissent ... [one wrote] “Elon’s my new boss and I’m stoked! ... 😅 🚀 🌕”
This employee was cut during the first round of layoffs. Soon, all the prominent members of the #i-dissent Slack channel would be gone."

Extremely Hardcore

Twitter’s staff spent years trying to protect the social media site against impulsive billionaires who wanted to use the reach of its platform for their own ends, and then one made himself the CEO.

And, this was before #ElonTwitter. Non-paywall article.

“Congressional investigators found evidence that tech platforms — especially Twitter — failed to heed their own employees’ warnings about violent rhetoric on their platforms and bent their rules to avoid penalizing conservatives… The draft report details how most platforms did not take “dramatic” steps to rein in extremist content until after the attack on the Capitol, despite clear red flags across the internet.”

What the Jan. 6 probe found out about social media, but didn’t report

The Jan. 6 committee's 845-page report offered few details of social media's role in the Capitol riot. Transcripts and an unreleased memo shows the committee knew more.
