Nella frenesia di Pettah, uno dei mercati più affollati della regione commerciale di Colombo, Sandya Jayasekara è impegnata a tagliare noci di cocco per i suoi clienti. Nonostante il caldo, Sandya deve lavorare all’aperto per guadagnarsi da vivere e finanziare le sue cure mediche. “Vendo noci di cocco [Cocos nucifera var. aurantiaca] fin da giovane,” racconta Sandya. “Ma le vendite sono eccezionalmente basse ora perché il prezzo delle noci di cocco varia,” da 200-220 rupie ($0.63-$0.70). The Department of Meteorology has issued an “orange alert,” urging the population to prepare for the heat and take appropriate precautions. Experts say that the current hot temperatures in Sri Lanka are not attributable to El Niño events.

Amid the hustle and bustle of Pettah, one of the busiest markets in the Colombo commercial region, Sandya Jayasekara is busy cutting coconuts for her clients. Despite the heat, Sandya must work outdoors to earn a living and finance her medical care. “I’ve been selling coconuts [Cocos nucifera var. aurantiaca] since I was young,” Sandya says. “But sales are exceptionally low now because the price of coconuts varies,” from 200-220 rupees ($0.63-$0.70). “The heat is unbearable and my skin sometimes turns red, but I can’t afford to stay home,” she adds.
