How safe is installing #NickelMenu on you Kobo?

Does it break with firmware updates?

If you're a nerd like me and have just bought a #kobo #elipsa #ereader and want to set it up offline, there's an amazing repo by Michal Ulianko which automatically sets up sideload mode, firmware updates and handwriting recognition for you.

You need to supply it with firmware, iink and fonts files, modify the script a little to install to the correct path and only install the things you actually want but then it just works.

All wrapped with a handy little #nix #flake.

Do you own a #Kobo e-reader? I love my #Elipsa 2E but there are two disadvantages I want to mention.

1. 32 GB is a lot but it's unexpandable. Luckily you can mount cloud space but unfortunately they support only Google Drive and Dropbox. I have my own Nextcloud with 5 TB capacity so I won't pay for another one. Why don't support that, too, dear Kobo? I can deal with it, but it could be easier and that annoys me.

2. This reader is great for PDF but ... you can't select any text in PDFs. And I need this feature because I have to translate a lot (my English sucks without a dictionary). There's nothing wrong with the Kobo's default dictionaries, they are great but I've installed a second custom English dictionary custom one overwriting another language which contains more entries.
