Over the past bit I've been slowly but surely rewiring old electrical in an old home. I've found some truly terrible stuff, like just electrical taping conductors together outside a box, no nuts or anything.
What's interesting though is that on AFCI breakers, none of these have ever been a problem. In fact, even with all my radio and electronic equipment, sketchy grounds, etc., neither ACFI nor GFCI has tipped to date -- far from the story of the first generation of such devices. They do trip when a tester is plugged in.
But it's made me wonder: how well do AFCIs work? What's the precision recall curve? As in, what are the odds that an electrical thermal event could happen despite being on AFCI?
Makes me intrigued about using a space heater as a stress tester, though that comes with the risks of creating an actual thermal event.
