Socio-Environmental #Conflicts in the European #Mountain Areas: Insights from the Global Atlas of Environmental Justice

> The analysis draws on 182 cases identified in the Global Atlas of Environmental Justice (#EJAtlas). Findings show a predominance of conflicts over #energy production, #water management, #extraction, and #waste, which often involve local communities opposing corporate actors. These conflicts frequently centre on #landscape degradation and the erosion of local #identities, reflecting tensions between external resource demands and local territorial values.

Moin :-)

In the #EJAtlas, an environmental conflict case refers to the contentious mobilizations of civil society actors in which explicit social-environmental claims are made against a specific project or economic activity that is pursued by state, corporate, and, sometimes, also illicit actors (e.g., illegal loggers).

These #conflicts usually arise from structural #inequalities of income and power. Dimensions of #environmentaljustice include distribution of the burdens of pollution and access to environmental resources, the right to participate in decision-making and the recognition of alternate world-views and understanding of development. The action repertoires may include formal claim-making, petitions, meetings, demonstrations, boycotts, strikes, legal actions, civil disobedience, collective violence, international campaigns and other action forms. In the act of claiming redistributions, these conflicts are often part of, or lead to larger gender, class, caste and ethnic struggles.

Rio Tinto / BHP's iron mining destroys sacred Aboriginal sites, Western Australia | EJAtlas

To make way for iron mining Rio Tinto destroys Juukan George, of significance to aboriginal people. BHP follows suit. Protests against such barbarity make companies apologize (too late) and reconsider decisions.
