Declarations of Independence: The Cinema of John Sayles
Screening @ TIFF
📌 "The political & artistic principles Sayles refused to compromise"
“accurately captures the Schenectady-born writer-director’s dual commitments to credibly naturalistic storytelling and penetrating social observation — qualities that have been in short supply in an American cinema predicated on spectacle and escapism, especially since the dawn of the #Reagan #Eighties”
— Adam Nayman

For #ThrowbackThursday here's my grandad getting an outdoors haircut from someone who may well be a fellow farmer. The youngest girl is my cousin Noreen and this is likely to be my mum's family home in Mayo, early 1980s.

For #ThrowbackThursday this is a family friend in the 1980s. This is Nabil, a Lebanese Druze who married an Irish Roman Catholic and raised confused kids. He used to be in the Beirut police force before coming to the UK to work at a hotel where he met and married Ethel from Ireland, and that's how my family came to know him. He later drove the buses in #Portsmouth and was legendary for his lack of patience with passengers and other drivers.
