New blog post: When an Air Meets a Beast: The Wild World of Mac eGPUs

Mac gaming has come a long way, but high-end performance still demands serious hardware. We're diving into the fascinating, slightly mad world of external GPUs and PCI passthrough for Macs, inspired by the likes of an M4 MacBook Air paired with an RTX 5090.

RTX 5090 + M4 MacBook Air: Can it Game?

What if you could strap a full desktop GPU to your MacBook Air? Turns out, you can.

MOREFINE G2 is an RTX 5060Ti graphics dock with 16GB GDDR7 and… questionable value at $1099

A little over a year ago Chinese mini PC maker MOREFINE introduced a compact graphics dock called the MOREFINE G1 that allowed you to connect an NVIDIA RTX 40-Series GPU to a laptop, handheld, or mini PC with an OCuLink or Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable.

Now the company is back with a new model, cleverly called the MOREFINE G2. Available for pre-order for $1099, it’s basically the same size and […]

GPD’s G2 GPU Dock supports PCIe 5.0 x8 via a MCIO 8i connector

Handheld gaming PC maker GPD has two new devices on the way, and neither are handhelds. One is a mini PC and the other is a GPU dock. What they have in common is that they’re some of the first consumer-focused devices with an MCIO 8i connector with support for PCIe 5.0 x8 connections using an external cable.

With support for data transfer speeds up to 256 Gbps, that means the new GPD BOX mini […]

I would, indeed, fancy an 8i #OCuLink interface!
Imagine 8 lanes of PCIe Gen4, instead of only 4.

In MY use case, that'd have to be some kind of mini PC, in which i can re-use my existing 64GB of DDR5 (2x32). 😅 ...i'm only considering paying for an upgrade, when i can drive my #Radeon 9060XT/16G #eGPU with 8 lanes.

No haste, though! My box runs all i need (faster than a 5800X3D, it seems), with adequate "Schwuptizität" (snappyness), as we call that here in Germany. 😉

Framework Laptop 16 OCuLink Dev Kit supports external PCIe 4.0 x8 GPUs and other accessories

The Framework Laptop 16 is a modular laptop with an Expansion Bay designed to let you add a discrete GPU to the notebook.. or swap out one GPU for another. But later this year Framework plans to give users another way to use that Expansion Bay.

An upcoming Framework OCuLink Dev Kit makes it possible to connect an external GPU or other accessories.

External graphics docks are nothing new – PC […]

Do I know anyone who A) runs #Linux and B) has an external GPU / #eGPU and ideally runs it over USB4?
@gamingonlinux basically what I was seeing: Games like DCS seem to greedily request VRAM for any potentially used plane etc., even if not in rendering distance. Which is a lot, especially on many multiplayer servers.
Then #AMD drivers moved stuff from #VRAM to RAM (ak. #GTT), which makes things very slow. Especially when using an #eGPU.
Furthermore, the AMD drivers don't seem to move stuff back from GTT/RAM to VRAM after some space in VRAM was freed, or by actual usage.

Apple approves drivers that let AMD and Nvidia eGPUs run on Mac — software designed for AI, though, and not built for gaming

Gamers are disappointed.
