„Nur vorübergehend“ heißt in der Politik oft: Für immer. Seit 2021 laufen diese Sonderregeln. Jetzt bis 2028 verlängern? Das riecht nach schleichender Normalisierung von Dauer-Scanning. Der EDPS sagt: gezielt statt wahllos! Notwendig und verhältnismäßig – nicht blind alles filtern. Kinder schützen, ja! Aber nicht alle Bürger unter Generalverdacht stellen.

Kinderschutz ist kein Vorwand für Massenüberwachung! Die EU verlängert „Übergangsregeln“ gegen CSAM – und plötzlich wird aus freiwilligem Scannen ein Dauerzustand. Der EDPS warnt klar: Kein pauschales Durchleuchten aller Chats! Keine anlasslose Total-Kontrolle! Wer Grundrechte schleift, um schlechte Politiker:innen zu beruhigen, verrät die Freiheit. Schutz ja. Generalverdacht nein.

#EDPS has issued new guidance and binding rules to protect data protection officer (DPO) independence across EU institutions 🇪🇺 .

All EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies (EUIs) are required to have a DPO. To strengthen their effectiveness and independence, the EDPS has supplemented its Supervisory Guidance on the role of DPOs (18 December 2025) with binding rules around DPO dismissal. These rules set out a clear process that EUIs must follow before when seeking the EDPS’s prior consent before dismissing a DPO.

@Supervisor said: “Since 2002, DPOs have been a cornerstone of effective data protection governance within EUIs. The updated Guidance and Rules on Consent for DPO Dismissal reinforce the DPO’s position as a critical internal safeguard for the protection of personal data.”

Ready for a take-off! 🛫

Today, trainees of #EDPS and #EDPB host the conference “Data takes flight: Navigating privacy at the airport” at the European Parliament.

@Supervisor welcomed the participants and opened the conference by setting the scene:

“Modern airports have become complex digital ecosystems. The goals of managing passenger flows, controlling borders and preventing crime are increasingly intertwined. Every journey generates data. Today, you will examine some of the most prominent examples: Passenger Name Records, Advance Passenger Information, biometric identifiers for identity verification, and data circulating across interconnected large-scale EU information systems.”

🗣️ His opening is followed by the keynote speaker Lynn Vleugels, DPO of #BrusselsAirport, who will take participants on a journey from booking to boarding sharing insights into data protection at the airport. The conference will host the Deputy Head of the Secretariat of #EDPB, Gwendal Le Grand whose takeaways will conclude the topic.

In the panel Vagelis Papakonstantinou #VUB, Stephanie M. #EDPB, Ana Regidor Bailly-Bailliere, #Amadeus, and Marco Stefan #EDPS, will discuss:

💡where our data travels every time we step onto a plane
💡the role of biometrics and other technologies
💡the implication of the interoperability between the Union's large-scale IT systems
💡as well as possible future developments
