Look west after sunset on March 19 to try spotting a razor-thin crescent moon less than 24 hours old with brilliant Venus lighting the way.

The Norse myths are laced with a melancholic focus on the end of an age. Karl Seigfried notes that today it also feels as though a way of living is passing. But just as Ragnarök leads to a rebirth, so too might our own times – if we are willing to work for it.

The Wild Hunt

A quotation from Thomas Carlyle

In that strange island Iceland, — burst up, the geologists say, by fire from the bottom of the sea; a wild land of barrenness and lava; swallowed many months of every year in black tempests, yet with a wild gleaming beauty in summertime; towering up there, stern and grim, in the North Ocean with its snow jokuls, roaring geysers, sulphur-pools and horrid volcanic chasms, like the waste chaotic battle-field of Frost and Fire; — where of all places we least looked for Literature or written memorials, the record of these things was written down.

Garm Series Part 5: I know more about Oh! My Goddess than I do about Digimon. Here, Shiho Sakakibara actually summons Garm, the watchdog of Niflheim (cf. poetic edda). Garm poses a real threat in this scene, and it takes a massive effort on Urd's part to defeat him. I was initially skeptical about this series, but in reality, there is a lot of Norse mythology to be found here, which surprised me in a very positive way. #ohmygoddess #garm #anime #manga #urd #ああっ女神さまっ #norsemythology #edda
Kamigami no Asobi Episode 7: Balder explains why he cannot be hurt, see Prose Edda. Thor is surprisingly calm. This does not correspond with the medieval sources. We also see a somewhat mischievous Loki, who deliberately misbehaves, but it also appears that he is simply jealous or wants to avoid upcoming difficulties.

Kamigano no Asobi, episode 3: the gods discuss their food, and Loki doesn't really care. Yet he is a glutton. In Gylfagynning of the Prose Edda, Loki claims he can eat faster than anyone else. He competes against Logi, but loses. Logi represents fire and even consumes the trough that held the food. No wonder Loki loses. Maybe Loki doesn't care what he gets to eat in the series. The important thing is food. #anime #神々の戯 #kamigaminoasobi #norsemythology #loki #edda #proseedda
Still stuck on Kamigami no Asobi: Balder is very clumsy and constantly falls over. However, nothing happens to him and even the forces of nature don't want to hurt him. This is clearly a reference to the Poetic Edda. Frigg makes all things swear not to harm Balder, except for a mistletoe branch, which Loki later uses to kill Balder. I'm curious to see if this will be picked up later in the series. #anime #神々の戯 #kamigaminoasobi #norsemythology #balder #loki #mistletoe #edda #poeticedda
