This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Edaphosaurus

In 1882, Edward Drinker Cope named and described Edaphosaurus, based on a crushed skull and lower jaw.

In 1886, Cope erected the new genus Naosaurus for skeletal remains similar to Dimetrodon.

In 1907, Ermine Cowles Case suggested that the Edaphosaurus skull belonged to Naosaurus skeletons.

In 1910 a new skeleton was found with a skull and body together.

In 1913, Samuel Wendell Williston and Case synonymized Naosaurus and Edaphosaurus.

Oh look, its two new mini-builds added to the Permian era stuff,
In the front row we have the two new ones, #moschops and #lystrosaurus
In the back we have #Gorgonops #Edaphosaurus and #Dimetrodon

What other Permian era stuff should I consider adding next? Or something earlier or later? Let me know

First up, the Synapsids.
These three (from top to bottom #Gorgonops #Edaphosaurus #Dimetrodon) were late comers to the design process. But chronologically, they were the earliest of the builds.
You can see that Edaph and Dime both use the same core body, with slightly different heads and sails.
5/X

I just argued for 10 minutes on Discord about whether the Edaphosaurus is a synapsid (correct) or a therapsid (incorrect).

It's a Linux server.

Granted, I started the poll for best dinosaur that included the Edaphosaurus as a joke vote, with clear indication that it's not a dinosaur, but still.

I think that xkcd comic may be right. Someone was wrong on the internet.

Either way, I like to think I won the argument

#Melanedaphodon’s teeth, which end in bulbous points, are unique. But they do possess some similarities to the chompers of #Edaphosaurus and living #lizards that eat plants as part of their diets.

Edaphosaurus pogonias by Sean Closson | Redbubble

Edaphosaurus was a synapsid that lived from the Late Carboniferous to the Early Permian eras (303.4 - 272.5 MYA), it was an herbivore that lived in and around wetland areas and was likely preyed upon by its meat eating relative and fellow sail-back, Dimetr
