I am currently not sure if the EcoFlow does what I want which is basically:

  • By preference runs everything off solar/battery
  • If solar/battery is too low then it switches to mains supply
  • Tops up battery overnight after 2AM (cheaper power)

    • I.e. I want to maximise use of free/cheaper power... not use it as a "UPS" in the usual sense of UPS.

    Also it looks like the DJI Power 2000 is a similar specification equivalent to consider, maybe slightly cheaper even: https://store.dji.com/uk/product/dji-power-2000?vid=184911

    In fact that does a 4kWh option for a pretty good £1,678.

    I probably need to watch some utoob summaries/reviews. That can be a research job for tonight.

    I present: The Bogalow Solar Array ... made up of 4x ~210W rated Sanyo panels manufactured in 2008.

    Managed to find a way to make 4 panels fit.

    Finger hovering over buying an EcoFlow Delta 3 Max Plus right now. (Mainly because it has the option to add more battery, the non-Plus doesn't... though also the Max Plus can take up to 1000W panels and there is scope in this space for me to add a few more which might be a good thing in winter.)

    Just saw someone mentioning ecoflow again and thought "hm, must check that out".

    Well, I dunno what their batteries etc. are like, but their website's an absolute dog's breakfast.

    Jumping flashing promotions, you have to choose a language fixed to your country (so if I'm in Europe and prefer to read in English I have to pick the UK site, even though for obvious reasons it's impossible to buy & import anything big from the UK any more), and then when you finally fight your way through to a solar system, for instance, the side of the page scrolls but not the main body of it - unclear whether this is deliberate or not, but standard web design rules would imply that the description of the product should be the scrolling bit, not all the components of the product.

    So anyway, I'm none the wiser but I do now feel like the company doesn't care about UX, which doesn't make me inclined to buy from them (also, from a brief glance at their French site, it's not properly localised AND some of the illustrations at least look like AI shit).

    In short, not good.

    I've made significant progress in my #solar power project. I drilled a one inch hole through my house (through 5.5 inches of wood) and now have two of my panels (350 Watts and still temporarily installed) feeding my #ecoflow battery system.

    The batteries are currently only running my hot water because that was really easy to unplug and plug into the inverter.

    Next step is to get some panels permanently mounted on the roof. That won't be fun.

    What's the deal with portable solar panels?

    Context: I'm looking to move further into the Mexican countryside (I'd be renting a house) where I'm told power outages are more frequent. I'm debating between no-break/UPS battery vs a proper #OffGrid setup vs a #PortableSolar setup.

    An off-grid setup seems formidably expensive, especially for a rented house, but does it make sense to get a portable battery + panel from, say, #Ecoflow (I see they have options in Mexico)? Their portable panels are priced significantly higher than fixed solar panels though.
