Zygaena carniolica on greater knapweed from today's first proper field trip since the end of June.

There only are two spots within my area where this species can be encountered. This area (which I usually only call "Zone I" or "Cherry Hill" in my notes) was too wet for me to get through the larger patch of greater knapweed, yet I still managed to observe at least one Z. carniolica nearby.

After one year and some new, much-needed literature, I finally managed to identify this dragonfly that, so far, has not come close enough to me to make it a little easier. A young Sympetrum vulgatum and its prey, a Zygaena carniolica.

On another positive note, it certainly is ironic that I finally got rid of my kidney stone just an hour ago. That's a birthday gift, for sure.
