A stunning moment from October 14, 2024—comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS blazing across the twilight sky at Eagle Lake in Lassen County, CA. Captured from the breakwater at Gallatin Marina during nautical twilight, with an 85% moon lighting up the scene. That tail spanned an estimated 15° across the sky!

The patrol boat in the frame belongs to the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department—right next to the dock I’ve launched from many times chasing Eagle Lake’s famed rainbow trout. Shot at just over 50mm on a full-frame camera, this view is pretty close to what I saw with my own eyes… just brighter thanks to the 8-second exposure.

Nature never disappoints. 🌌🚤🌲

Yesterday's close encounter off Pike’s Point with this stunning Common Loon (or Great Northern Diver, depending on where you’re from) was something else.

Dressed in its dramatic black-and-white breeding plumage, with red eyes that seem to stare right through you, this bird is built for stealth and speed—like a feathered submarine. I watched as it cruised through the glassy water, throwing a cautious glance toward my camouflaged setup. It knew something was off, but not enough to keep it from coming in close.

Their haunting calls echo across foggy mornings on Eagle Lake, adding an eerie soundtrack to these moments. And with their incredible diving skills, they’re perfectly suited to catch the tui chub that abound in these waters.

A peaceful January evening at Eagle Lake, CA. This area, known as "Heart Failure," once had more water and was a prime fishing spot. The name might come from the sharp turn on the icy road leading here—definitely not for the faint of heart!

With the fishing season closed and mild weather, only a thin layer of ice formed on the lake, beautifully reflecting the pastel sky as the sun dipped below the horizon. Moments like these make winter strolls unforgettable. ❄️🌅

A peaceful, icy morning at Eagle Lake, CA. ❄️ The delicate icicles on the reeds, the soft mist over the water, and the smooth reflections create a dreamlike scene. Captured with a long exposure to enhance the stillness. #NatureLovers #MistyMorning #EagleLake

#EagleLakeFirstNation challenges #NWMO in court

By Mike Stimpson, 2 January 2025

EAGLE LAKE – "#EagleLake #FirstNation is challenging the #NuclearWasteManagementOrganization’s site selection in court, and that’s more than welcome news to Neecha Dupuis.

"'I love it,' Dupuis, a member of the #Ojibway Nation of #Saugeen (#SavantLake), said from Ottawa. 'Just pure love.'

"Eagle Lake’s chief 'came and walked with us' in this year’s #WalkAgainstNuclearWaste, she noted.

"'It’s all coming together, like one giant dream catcher,' Dupuis said.

"Dupuis said she doesn’t understand #WabigoonLakeOjibway Nation’s decision to move forward with the NWMO on possibly constructing a deep geological repository, or DGR, for high-level nuclear waste.

"'For them to choose nuclear waste over the land, that doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make sense at all.'"
