A brick mystery. I came across this unusual use of curved bricks to form the base of a window opening on a very old building while out for a walk in Littleport in Cambridgeshire. Maybe I’m being a bit dim but I can’t find an example of anything else like this on line. There are examples of slightly curved bricks out there but the curve on these has a much tighter radius. Another crocheted pillar box topper has appeared around the corner from where I live. This time, it’s a rather good version of Shaun the Sheep. Shaun is leaning forward a bit in these photos I took a few days ago but when I drove past this morning I noticed someone had restored him to the correct upright position.

@MarSolRivas Appropriately enough, the local mystery crochetier where I live has been busy again, this time with an Easter bunny theme.

Twenty’s plenty - or so they say. The place where I live, the small cathedral city of Ely in Cambridgeshire, is implementing a blanket 20 mph speed limit, which is being rolled out over the next few weeks. Supporters of the change outnumbered opponents by about two to one when a consultation exercise was held last year. Where the signs are already up, as here on the main road next to the street where I live, motorists seem to be happily observing the new limit.

Another post box topper from the incredibly productive local mystery crochetier. This one looks like it was designed for New Year, although I only spotted it this morning.

It looks as though the local guerrilla crochetier has been in action again, this time down at the railway station. A lot of thought and effort seems to have gone into this one.

A furtive mystery crochetier always decorates my local Royal Mail postbox with his or her work to mark major occasions. Christmas is no exception!

Merry Christmas everyone.

Yesterday I featured the turquoise and white colour scheme for taxis in East Yorkshire. Today we’re looking at the yellow and black livery used in Newmarket in Suffolk, shown off here to its best advantage by this Tesla Model S back in 2016. The black/yellow combination is similar to that used by Barcelona’s taxis so, for me at least, a visit to Newmarket always triggers thoughts of sun and flyaway weekend breaks. #Tesla #taxi #Newmarket #dwprovincialbritain #WeirdCarMastodon #davidsdailycar
Today, a PS to the recent #davidsdailycar sequence on Skodas. Here we see an Octavia estate at work in a typical role as a provincial British taxi. London is famous for its (traditionally but not compulsorily) black taxis but several other local areas have their own distinctive colour schemes too, here the turquoise and white combo used in East Yorkshire, which is very similar to Brighton’s, save for the proud Yorkshire rose on the rear doors. #Skoda #taxi #WeirdCarMastodon #dwprovincialbritain
Britain’s famous old telephone boxes are usually bright red but in Kingston-Upon-Hull (better known to its friends as just plain Hull) they are white. For some obscure reason, Hull got left out when municipal phone companies in the UK were consolidated under Post Office ownership. These examples are in the pretty nearby town of Beverley rather than in Hull itself. I like the way the illuminated white box (right) gives off a ghostly vibe on a dank autumn evening. #Hull #dwprovincialbritain
