Here's an odd thing. Dunedin's mayor Sophie Barker and former councillor Jim O'Malley jointly own a company called Ayrmed which sells collagen serum. This stuff sells for $65 for 50ml -- $1,300 per litre.
The problem is the company's advertised claims that their product is both "magic" and "miraculous", breaching the Advertising Standards Authority’s therapeutic and health advertising code. Professor of consumer behaviour at Otago Robert Aitken agrees such unsubstantiated claims cannot be used.
Here's where it gets weird. Instead of removing the offending claims, O'Malley has gone into fight or flight mode.
"If the ODT publishes Prof Aitken’s statements, I will have no option but to clear Ayrmed’s name by suing both the University of Otago and the ODT for deformation."
Why on earth is O'Malley digging himself such an enormous hole? And threatening "deformation" just makes him look silly.
A quiet word, Jim. The word is "defamation".
