Baxter’s Leftie-Progressive DCC By-election Guide May 2026

For all you fossil fuel users in #otepoti #dunedin (including me, so no judgement) you'll be pleased to know there's an oil tanker docked at the Oil Jetty. yay 😅 ..... It's basically blocking my view of the harbour 😆

I'm seething.
There's always something, I know. But this is a sneaky, petty thing. DCC backtracking on opening the Caversham tunnel to cyclists and pedestrians so soon after finally agreeing to progress it. They have been dragging the chain on it for so many years.

Annual Plan Submission 2026 | Dunedin Tunnels Trail Trust

The Chain Hills tunnel is open and a wonderful success! The last 1-day count showed approx. 450 visitors. The Council has removed the Tunnels Trail project from the 9yr plan and the Trust has undertaken to work on the stages through to Green Island and onto Kaikorai Valley.   But the DCC control access to the Caversham Tunnel.

New at my Patreon... At the magnificent Dunedin railway station, I boarded a train that would take me through stages of increasingly impressive scenery - to the spectacular Taieri Gorge:

Here's an odd thing. Dunedin's mayor Sophie Barker and former councillor Jim O'Malley jointly own a company called Ayrmed which sells collagen serum. This stuff sells for $65 for 50ml -- $1,300 per litre.

The problem is the company's advertised claims that their product is both "magic" and "miraculous", breaching the Advertising Standards Authority’s therapeutic and health advertising code. Professor of consumer behaviour at Otago Robert Aitken agrees such unsubstantiated claims cannot be used.

Here's where it gets weird. Instead of removing the offending claims, O'Malley has gone into fight or flight mode.

"If the ODT publishes Prof Aitken’s statements, I will have no option but to clear Ayrmed’s name by suing both the University of Otago and the ODT for deformation."

Why on earth is O'Malley digging himself such an enormous hole? And threatening "deformation" just makes him look silly.

A quiet word, Jim. The word is "defamation".

Imagine you're in #Dunedin, #NZ and need to fly to Wellington NZ for a meeting of some kind, you have to be physically present.

It's currently Tuesday, and you need to be there on Thursday.

Jetstar: arrive at 5:10pm (via Auckland), depart at 9:10pm. $1350.
AirNZ: arrive at 2:20pm, depart at 4:30pm. $1100.
Combine: 2:20pm to 9:10pm. $1355.

AirNZ drops to $800 if you depart on Wednesday, so add overnight accommodation.

The Otago Daily Times had to do a *lot* of censoring on this front page story:
